Chapter 16

“Something smells amazing,” Hawk said as he backed Denver’s wheelchair through the door and Toly nodded.

“Sage is an excellent cook. I always enjoy dinner at Holderson Manor,” he informed him and Hawk grinned.

“Holderson Manor. That’s cute.”

“You should see the arsenal and the panic room. Thanks,” Denver said then gestured for them to let him take the wheels.

“Dinner won’t be ready for an hour or so. I could give you a tour,” Lavender offered but his brows pulled together as he leaned to see around them. “Were we expecting one more for dinner?” He asked and Toly spun as a rental car pulled into the driveway. Paul jumped out and hurried up the lawn before Toly could access the rental company’s records. “I don’t like this,” Lavender noted loudly and Lane looked worried as he peeked around the kitchen door.

“I thought he was staying in DC to keep an eye on things there,” Lane said and Lavender held his hands up cluelessly as he looked to Toly.

“I don’t know!” He promised.

“I assume you’re here to deliver bad news,” Lavender said as Paul jogged up the porch steps. Paul’s lips pulled tight as he pushed his sleeve up and checked the display on his wrist. It didn’t show the time, just two sets of coordinates.

“It’s only bad if you can think of a good reason why my husband’s in Newport, Rhode Island and not answering his phone,” he said and raised his brows at Lavender.

“Rhode Island!” Lane yelled at Lavender as he rushed down the hall.

“Why the hell are they in Rhode Island?” Lavender yelled at Paul but he shook his head wildly.

“I wouldn’t be here if I fucking knew! I was in Chicago to surprise Reginald. Why the hell are they in Rhode Island?” He yelled back.

“Wilder’s with them. He isn’t answering either but he sent a message earlier,” Toly informed them and Lavender blinked at him expectantly.

“And what did Wilder say?” He asked and Toly squeezed an eye shut.

“That they were in Rhode Island and that it was safer if his phone was off because they’re on their way to Blackhurst,” he said and Lavender’s eyes widened. He pressed his hands together and tapped his fingers against his lips.

“Why didn’t you share that with us?” He asked slowly and Toly cringed harder. He held up his bandaged hand hoping Lavender would feel more sympathetic and less furious.

“I assumed Marston had a good reason for keeping us in the dark but I don’t always trust his motives so Wilder is keeping me posted,” he admitted apologetically. Sage made a knowing sound as he propped his shoulder against the wall.

“I don’t think anyone blames you but we owe Reginald the benefit of the doubt. I have a feeling he’s protecting Jeremy,” he said and Lavender swore as he rubbed the bridge of his nose.

“While I appreciate what you and Reginald are trying to do, I wish you’d behave as you’re expected and let me deal with Blink,” he ground out then flashed Toly a wide smile.
